A Jockey who could be worth following for the rest of the season!!

Hi,just thought I would throw this out there as a matter of interest and something a little bit different for the forum to cogitate about.I have mentioned him previously but things may be about to change and could make him profitable to follow for the rest of the season.

Antonio Fresu, like Andrea Atzeni hails from my second home Sardinia and not as some commentators would have us believe Frankie.Although Frankies family hail from this beautiful island,he was actually born in Milan.

I have kept an eye on Antonio as I used to watch his father ride around Poetto,Chilivani and Sassari,Poetto and Sassari being sand tracks and Chilivani the only turf track on the Island. His father was a very talented jockey and some of that appears to have rubbed off on Antonio.

Unfortunately unlike his father Antonio is a bit full of himself and his biggest drawback in endearing himself to owners and trainers. However I have heard that things may be about to turn in his favour with better rides to come.

Recently he has been legged up on pretty moderate animals to say the least.Marco Botti and Ed Dunlop are the two biggest stables who have been using him although he has had rides for others like Mike Murphy.

All depending on him toning down his "exuberance" I have it on good authority that he is in line to get the leg up on some better horses. He certainly has the talent which has obviously been noticed.

If he grasps the opportunities he could soon be catching the eyes of punters and trainers, being relatively under the radar now could be the time to keep a close eye on his rides.

You can never have too many strings to your punting bow so thought this could be something the forum could use to their advantage for the remainder of the season.Unless his mouth gets in the way he could be on some horses whos price might be bigger than they should be just because of his relative anonymity.

Keep a weather eye open for any rides he picks up at the Glorious Goodwood meeting,he could realistically turn his current level stakes losses into a + figure.

I will try and get as much info as I can and post it on here when possible so best of luck with your punting.

Anyone else got an opinion of an under the radar jockey they think might be worth following?

Re: A Jockey who could be worth following for the rest of the season!!

Has anyone been keeping a weather eye on Fresu? I hope a few backed Whispered Kisses on Saturday at Newmarket, plenty of 16s about and the sp of 14/1 was not too shabby.Of course he has had only 1 winner from 8 rides in the last 14 days so too early to say he will finish the season with a + profit but a decent start if you are following just the same.

As alluded to, he has to tone down his exuberance if he is to get more rides, that said he is willing to travel far and wide for just the odd ride. His only booked rides this week so far are.

Tomorrow 1845 hrs Kempton Hawker Hurricane
Thursday 1925 hrs Newcastle Fabulous Red
Friday 1730 hrs Newmarket Kodiac Express
Saturday 1710 hrs Lingfield Arrucian

No worthwhile info to impart on his mounts as yet but this snippet may be of interest. He was going to ride Whispered Kisses in the 1945 hrs at Yarmouth tomorrow but Mike Murphy has opted to negate the 6lb penalty she picked up for her win at Newmarket on Saturday.

He has given the ride to very capable George Buckell who claims 5lb,she drops back a furlong and was slotted to carry 10 st 4lb.Likely to be a short enough price to follow up but heard that Yarmouth has had a fair bit of rain and any give would be in her favour.

If I hear anything significant on any of them I will update if possible.

Good luck with all your bets.

Or rather just read below for a glimpse into Antonio Fresu's background? The following are horses ridden by his father and taken directly from the racecard.Unlike Andrea Atzeni,Antonio's background is steeped in horse racing even from this small Island.Something not too many if any forum readers would be aware of.I think Antonio is every bit as talented as Andrea but find it fascinating the gulf between them at the moment.Already explained what is probably holding Antonio back and only he can rectify that,if he does then there should be no reason he cannot emulate Andrea.Anyway only going to post some races Antonios's father rode in to make a point to Moonman and hopefully put a stop to the stupidity of attacking every thread just for the hell of it.

Owner                             Trainer            Jockey         Horse     Weight

 Antonio Sechi                G.Muroni      S.Muroni Jr  1.  Leone       65 kg

Pietro Cossu                   G.Cherchi      P.Agus         2.  Luna         58 kg

Mario Baule                     S.Migheli      L.Falchi       3.    Linda        51.5 kg

Giov. Tolmino Calvia       G.B Muroni   G.Cabitza     4.  Lugano       54 kg

Pasqua Gettu                  T.Fresu         S.Fresu*      5.Lisastella       54.5 kg

Scuderia Elicriso             L.Godani       A.Godani     6.Landru          55kg

The race was worth L 3,300,000 (1,500,000 to the winner) approx £800 to the winner.

Stefano Fresu (Antonios dad) claimed about 2kg depicted by the *

He finished 3rd behind Landru whos breeding was Gallileo out of Altamura, work that one out in 1987?

Stefano Fresu had six more rides on the card which yielded 1 win in the 1700 hrs race on a horse called Leone de Codinas which carried topweight of 69 kg less Stephano's claim.Trained by T.Fresu as were most of his rides. The horse paid L49,000 on the tote for the win and L20,000 for the place, the forecast paid L 57,000.

In the last race T.Fresu had 2 runners, the race was worth 8,800,000 lire, his outsider of the two won,Stephano's mount unplaced fav!!!

The 4th race on the card was worth L 22,000,000 (yes 22 million lire) about £12,000 sterling.Puts some of British racing to shame given this is a tiny course on a tiny island and the majority of run of the mill races in UK are for less all these years later. They had a race worth £40,000 at Chilivani in 1987 for International horses and yet only 3 French ones turned up.Suited me as all the locals were backing local horses and the French filled 1st 2nd and 3rd for a nice trifecta.

Anyway just put that lot up to put to bed the incongruous attacks by Moonman. As said before many times,I post nothing that is not true and usually confirmed after the event by the Racing Post interviews with connections or trainers.

My sole purpose is to give some interest to forum users and maybe help along the way with your punting. Not everybody's cup of tea but then you do not have to read or follow advice?

Re: A Jockey who could be worth following for the rest of the season!!

Just an update,Antonio's mount Kodiac Express has not been declared for Newmarket and has been declared for the 1725 hrs at Nottingham on Tuesday with Antonio still booked to ride.

His intended ride tomorrow is an indication of what I said originally that things should begin to look up for him.Ed Dunlop has jocked him up on Fabulous Red in the 1935 hrs at Newcastle.Only a Maiden on the synthetic and in a maximum field and her first try away from turf.

However the word is that she has worked on an artificial surface at home and worked well, confidence is high that the fillies allowance will see her very competitive as opposed to saying she will win, expected to go off near enough fav.An obvious chance on form and guaranteed Antonio will be giving her maximum effort from the saddle.

Marco Botti has given him the leg up on a well bred filly called Little Poem in the Seller at 1805 hrs at Newmarket. Bad signs that she wears a hood on her debut and 1st time up is a seller. However word is that she can go a bit despite being a difficult filly and headstrong at home and if she wins expect the bidding to be vigorous to buy her back in.Obviously everything will be a first experience for her so confidence is tempered but if she repeats her homework has every chance.

That about covers it for the moment but will update as and when possible with anything new.Hope some got some of the evens on Whispered Kiss at Yarmouth, would have won with Antonio up regardless of the 10st 4lb.

As the point of the thread was whether he finishes with a + or - to level stakes at the end of the turf season since starting the thread, here is his record to date at SP.

7 losers = - 7 points
1 winner @ 14/1 = + 13 points
+ 6 points running total.

Best of luck whatever your bets.

Amazingly Fabulous Red in the 1925 hrs at Newcastle is widely available at 5/1 with a few firms going 11/2.I can't understand why she is so big and would advise getting on at the 11/2 with BOG if anyone is going to back her,she looks pretty solid for at least a place.

Good luck if you back her.

Re: A Jockey who could be worth following for the rest of the season!!

Quick update, unfortunately no winners to report but unlucky with Intisaab, collared on the line.Hope some of you noticed my compy tip in the monthly and had the ew at 20s SP or the 22s that was available.9 losers since my last update but to be fair mostly huge prices and he gave Intisaab a great ride, the only surprise was the price, also went close on Rocksette at 20s.

Now picking up rides for various trainers so hopefully can finish off the season with some better mounts.

Running total - 3 points.

Has only one booked ride today and Kyshoni looks to have a mountain to climb,in the words of a work rider "A bloody minded animal".However she also says that she has been in season (the horse not the rider) and is better than she has shown on the track and is hoping Antonio can get her out straight and among horses. That and the new surface she says could bring about a better performance but advises only a small ew if inclined to back her.33s general but might even drift, good luck if you have a small ew but it is entirely speculative obviously.

Re: A Jockey who could be worth following for the rest of the season!!

No change from the filly,a complete enigma. The reason she immediately dives left leaving the stalls appears entirely psychological as nothing obvious has been revealed physically.Antonio lost the war as soon as the stalls opened despite he and the brilliant handlers winning the battle to get her in.

Mike Murphy is considering several options to try and rectify her propensity to turn left out of the stalls, each will be given serious consideration, the following is but a sample of methods being considered.

1.Putting lead in her right ear, similar to a Vincent O'Brien horse ridden by Lester Piggot who gave the advice to Vincent in the unsaddling enclosure. When Vincent asked how he should do this,Lester replied deadpan "With a fuc*$ng shotgun".

2.Fitting a pricker bit, dropped noseband and a spur on the jockeys right boot.

3.Declaring only at Chester with all the tackle as above and withdrawing if not drawn in stall 1.

4. Blinding her in her left eye similar to the banned practice of pin firing bad legs,no such rule for removing an eye within the rules of racing.

5.Selling her to race at Cactus Gulch Casino Racetrack in New Mexico which is left handed and 2f in circumference.

6. Booking Davey Russel to ride her in a Hurdle Race at Cartmel.

The BHA have advised Mike that they have no problem with the first 5 but will have to consult with the Irish authorities visa vie Davey Russel as they would not wish to bring racing into disrepute!!!  Of topic of course but imo Davey being hounded because the authorities have caved in to Social Media and ISPCC?

Anyway back on track,Antonios only booked ride for tomorrow is Kodiac Express and the same work rider says she thinks the filly will be suited by the stiff 5f at Sandown 1340 hrs.If possible she will be ridden as close to the pace as possible, she says granted luck in running she should place and would not be surprised if she won.Currently 11/1 with B365,10s and 9s elsewhere. Good luck if you have an ew interest.

Re: A Jockey who could be worth following for the rest of the season!!

Just a quick mention of St James Park in the next at Kempton.Had a message just a few minutes ago pointing out that I failed to mention the 1st time blinkers on my tip in the monthly compy.

Pointed out to me that he had worked really well in the headgear and connections will be very disappointed if he did not run above his odds, currently around 16/1.

Antonio's next booked mount is in the 1805 at Salisbury on Friday and it looks a tough race. However she is said to be much better than her last 2 starts and goes here with a first time eyeshield.Similar comments to his ride tonight and may be worth an ew interest depending on 8 runners lining up.

I am popping over to Venice for the next few weeks so may not get around to updating the thread, however as you may have noticed Antonio has gone agonisingly close on a few since starting the thread,at big prices.I hope he will continue doing so and maybe pop one in the back of the net.

Good luck and hope when I get around to updating the thread he has scored a few.

Re: A Jockey who could be worth following for the rest of the season!!

As most will know Antonio's season finished early and unfortunately without too much to write home about in terms of winners. However the reason his season in the UK finished earlier was for reasons that I predicted early on in this thread.

He has gone out to the UAE and is getting rides for some of the top trainers combined with riding work for them.It is a great chance for him to cement some relationships rather than flogging around the AW.

If anyone has been following even casually you will have noticed how he gives every horse a ride to get the best out of the animal without knocking 7 bells out of his mounts.Gone very close on some big priced horses and shown his willingness to travel for a single ride on an outsider.

His time in the UAE will be valuable and if he keeps his head down and works hard his reward will come next year.If he does that then the word is that several prominent trainers are set to use him next season.

Worth keeping a weather eye open to see how things pan out but I do not think you will lose by backing his mounts throughout 2018 including the run up to Dubai World Cup.

Personally glad the flat season has ended as my first love is NH so good luck all for what promises to be an intriguing season ahead.
